NBYC Emergency Electrical Repair is Underway

In an effort to keep the membership informed of happenings at the club:

The wiring to the electric chain hoists on the end of the crane dock has failed.  We have experienced several hoist problems this season and have tracked it back to the wiring rather than the hoists themselves.  These hoists are an absolute necessity for our one design sailing program.  They are used to launch the club power boats, and the Lightnings, 420’s, Blue Jays and other sail boats.  A temporary repair using what is essentially a very heavy duty “extension cord” was put in place at the end of last week so the hoists could be used for the Lightning Districts.  This temporary repair is not per code for a permanent installation and not suitable for the long term.  A permanent repair involves rewiring the dock.  The cost is approximately $3000 to $5000 depending on exactly what has to be done, if some of the existing equipment is suitable for re-use, etc.  The Board has authorized this work to be done as an “emergency” expenditure.  This is not a budgeted item and the funds will be taken from our cash reserves.  The work will be done by a licensed electrician with a mind toward a proper long term fix, not a temporary “band-aid”.
