NBYC - Broadwater Project Position

The Board of Governors is considering taking an official position on the Broadwater Project.  We would not normally look to take a position on ‘political’ issues but this project has a direct impact on the Sound, the club and the waters we sail and swim in – so we are considering taking a stand.  If you are not familiar with Broadwater, this is the LNG tanker docking and pipeline project that is under consideration for Long Island Sound.  It would involve very large tankers of LNG transiting through our end of the Sound on their way to a docking station to be built in the western end of the Sound for offloading.  There is a rather large safety zone (measured in miles) where no boats could intrude while these boats are in transit.  Those in favor argue for the need of this clean burning energy, those opposed talk of the safety issues, intrusion on the Sound and environmental issues.  There are many websites where you can get more information:

There is also a local forum this weekend where you can learn more.  (Note - given that it is sponsored by a group in opposition the viewpoint is likely to be somewhat biased.)

The Board is looking for your feedback.  Are you in support or opposed?  Should the Board take an official position on this issue?  Should the Board ever take positions on ‘political’ issues?  Should the Board strive to keep members informed of ‘political’ issues that may affect the club and the membership or just keep our nose out?

Just click “Reply” and send back your comments BUT PLEASE keep them brief and to the point.

Thank you,

Harlan Fredericksen, Vice Commodore

On behalf of the Board of Governors
