With apologies for the late notice, following
is the funeral information for Thorny Lathrop as published in The Day:
East Lyme - Thornton Havens Lathrop, 52,
of New York City and Niantic, died Wednesday,
Aug. 1, 2007, at his home in Battery Park City in Manhattan, after a long battle with
adenocarcinoma.
Born in New London, Thornton was the son on
Josephine Knox and the late Donald Lathrop of Niantic and grew up in Niantic.
He graduated from East
Lyme High
School where he played football and was on the
crew team. He also was a member of the Niantic Volunteer Fire Department. Thornton graduated from Johnson
& Wales University
in Providence and began his career at General
Dynamics in purchasing, later moving to the Baltimore area to work for Martin Marietta,
also in purchasing. Leaving the defense industry, Thornton
subsequently worked for DMJM in both Baltimore
and New York City
as a contract manager. He moved to New
York City in 2000 to work as a contract manager on the
AirTrain project for the Port Authority and in 2002 joined Cubic Transportation
Systems.
In 1982 Thornton
joined the Big Brothers of America program, the start of a 25 year relationship
with his little brother, Norris Brown. Thornton
was the manager of the East Lyme softball
team, the Buzzard Softball Dynasty, from 1980 until the team was disbanded in
1988, but continued to organize Buzzard events and to keep the team spirit
alive long after the games were over. In March 2006 Thornton
organized a Buzzard team trip to Hinckley, Ohio, to celebrate the annual Buzzard Day, and in March
2007 the group went to St. Petersburg,
Fla., for a reunion. Thornton became a loyal
fan of the New Orleans Saints when they were national football underdogs and
has always been an avid fan of the Celtics. He loved nature and to ski, sail,
hike, and mountain bike, but even more, he loved the vast group of friends he
had gained over the years.
Thornton will be very missed by his wife, Joanne
Taylor, and stepdaughters, Haley and Kim Klatzkin. He also leaves his mother,
Josephine Knox Lathrop; as well as two sisters, Susan Moore of Niantic and
Tammy Maynard of Waterford; two brothers, Donald Lathrop of Ledyard and James
Lathrop of Niantic; as well as little brother, Norris Brown of St. Louis, Mo.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Frank
E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076

America or to Calvary Hospital Hospice.
