Mary Miller

 

 

Niantic - Mary Ellen "Mel" Miller, 54, of Crescent Beach, Niantic, went to a well-earned rest on Dec. 30, 2007, after a long struggle with breast cancer.

She was born on Oct. 31, 1953 to the late David Hay Miller and Margaret Miller Bloom of Crescent Beach, graduated from Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford, and received her degree from Lasell College in Auburndale, Mass.

She was an owner of Rolling In Dough restaurant in Mystic, a former manager of the Southeastern Connecticut Children's Museum in Niantic, and was most recently employed as volunteer coordinator for Children In Placement, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to assisting children in the court system in cases of alleged neglect or abuse, where she also volunteered her time as a guardian ad litem. She was an active and enthusiastic member of Niantic Bay Yacht Club, and had a lifelong passion for sailing and the sea. She enjoyed gardening, the companionship of her dogs, Keel and Rudder, UConn Huskies Basketball, good music, and the company of many remarkable and dedicated friends, especially in the last year of her illness. A talented storyteller, she was collecting and archiving an oral history of Crescent Beach at the time of her death.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret, and her stepfather, Donald M. Bloom, of Niantic; her brothers, Jim Miller, of New London, and David H. Miller and his wife, Susan, of Falls Church, Va.; and her niece and nephew, Rachel and Alex Miller. She is also survived by her sister, Sharon Ensslin and her husband, John, her brother, Alan Bloom, and his wife, Sarah, and her brothers, Steven Bloom and Mitchell Bloom.

Her love of life, impassioned dedication to those in need, and wonderful sense of humor will remain alive in the fond memories of many uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

Special mention must be made of the extraordinary care she and her family received in her last days from Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut and the staff of Bride Brook Health and Rehabilitation Center of Niantic.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic. The Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 400 Main Street, Niantic, with a reception at Niantic Bay Yacht Club to follow.
