Looking for some fun on the water on one of the (hopefully for
this occasion) no wind days? Try your hand at fluke fishing! This year will be the 7th Annual NBYC Fluke Fest, AKA "The
Walter", named after Walter Reichart, a great supporter of the event. The
founders included Paul Smith, John Hajosy, Bob Vannini and Carl Schlott. Carl
donated "The Walter Cup" in 2003 - a large silver trophy awarded to
the winner of the tournament who also gets sizable lucre from the proceeds of
the entry fee. The 2nd place angler also gets a smaller prize. Gathering time: Friday, July 11th, typically from
7:30 to 8:30 in the morning...at the club. The tournament runs from 7:30 AM to
4:00PM, so be prepared to spend a good day on the water. There is a $5 entry
fee. Bring your own tackle and bait. No Boat? Best idea is to
ask the powerboat guys who's going and might have some room at least a
week or two in advance. Dinner follows, but always subject to the size of
the catch. Hot dogs are always a fallback. Big challenge this year
(aside from $5.00/gallon gas): the size of a "Keeper" increases
to 19 1/2 inches in CT waters, 20 inches in RI and 21 1/2 inches in NY (read Thank you to the organizers for rescheduling this event due
to conflicts with regattas. It is usually held in late June.
Hopefully the fluke will like (or dislike – depending on their point of
view) this later date! Contact Paul Smith at paulsmith66@hotmail.com for
additional information. |
