NBYC - sad news re Harry Howard - additional info



Additional information is listed below from The Day.

 

Honorary member of the Niantic Bay Yacht Club, Harry Howard, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2008.  Harry was also a founding member of the club.  He ran the Niantic Boat Yard for many years.  He was an active part of the race committee years ago as he provided one of the Boat Yard’s work boats as a race committee boat.  Funeral arrangement details are not known at this time but we will pass along information as we learn of any details.

Niantic - Harry S. Howard, 86, of 7 Dodge Court, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2008, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.

Mr. Howard was born on October 4, 1921 in Niantic, he was the son of H. Melville and Naomi Beljean Howard. He attended local schools and graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va., in 1940. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. On October 8, 1945, Mr. Howard was married to Hazel Ritenour in Woodstock, Va. Mr. Howard was also the owner of the former Niantic Boat Yard. He was a 50 year member of the Bay View Lodge #120 AF and AM in Niantic and was active in other affiliates of the Mason's. He was a member of the Niantic Baptist Church, Niantic Fire Department, Niantic Bay Yacht Club and American Legion Post #128 and VFW Post 5849, both in Niantic. He also served as the East Lyme/Waterford Harbor Master from 1964 to 1983.

Besides his wife, Mr. Howard is survived by his son, Philip E. Howard ,of Niantic, his daughter, Mary V. Howard and her husband, Douglas Chesler, of Groton, his sister, Ruth C. Kabel of Bothel, Wa; and his four grandchildren, Mary H.M. Howard of Niantic, Philip E. Howard Jr. and his wife Teresa of Westerly, R.I.; and Benjamin and Julia Farrar, both of Groton.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home of Niantic is handling the arrangements.
